Cathalijn Wouters
Cathalijn Wouters, painter (1955), AKV St. Joost Breda, soloshows in New York 2010 and Shanghai 2013, residency in Beijing and New York / Mondriaan Fonds, live drawing at choreographer Hans van Manen at Dutch National Ballet 2013.
Cathalijn Wouters has been exploring shapes or Body Language in her drawings for many years. Her work is a dialogue with the pictorial tradition, but at the same time, it is a very individual attempt to communicate in her own way. Her drawings mark (bodily) forms in order to touch upon what lies behind and beyond these outer forms, to reveal the inner. Thereby her work concretizes the mysteries of emotion and reflects on the human condition.
In her new, monumental paintings Wouters demonstrates a new, fascinating technique. She integrates the art of drawing and the art of painting both on paper and canvas, but also applies the technique of assemblage or collage.
Her conscious use of the structure and resilience of the linen canvas gives her brushstrokes – so recognizable for her oeuvre – a new dimension. Her works show a rich dialogue with all kinds of central aspects of the art practice. Her recent works testify to Wouters’ deep love for painting. The many details in these paintings all have their own reality but all together form a vibrant visual narrative in which every viewer can find his or her own significance.
