David Sagnier (Barcelona, 9 November 1963) embodies a singular artistic trajectory, combining the rigour of a career as an executive in multinational corporations with a lifelong connection to artistic creation. His artistic education began at an early age within his own family, under the close and sustained guidance of his grandmother, an artist who played a fundamental role in shaping his artistic sensibility and understanding of form and material. This early and lasting mentorship laid the foundations of his artistic practice, nurtured by a family environment deeply connected to art and creative expression.
After a career in the corporate world, Sagnier devoted himself fully to his artistic vocation, developing his work between Paris and Barcelona. Working primarily with Corten steel, oxidation, light and the void, he pursues an essential visual language that distils complex ideas into simple forms. His practice brings together the sensitivity of drawing, an interest in thetransformation of materials and a continuous search for forms that invite the viewer to look beyond the immediately visible.
The Genesis of the Gaze
It all begins in Cadaqués. Under this Mediterranean light, between the sea and the rocks, his artistic sensibility was shaped through contact with the organic and the mineral. This indissoluble bond with nature defines his approach to sculpture today: an act of humility.
While the artist shapes the material, he leaves it to nature—air, water and light—to complete the work, creating a living dialogue in which oxides reveal changing textures and shadows.
The DNA of the Stroke: The Complexity of the Simple
Sagnier’s work is based on the concept of the “single stroke”: a pure line that structures the void and translates the complexity of the world into essential forms. Whether working with Corten steel, paper or other media, his research strives for profound clarity. For him, sculpture is a bridge: a silent form of communication in which form suggests more than it shows, and silence ultimately speaks.
Space and Light
Having exhibited in Paris, Madrid and Barcelona, Sagnier is currently exploring the integration of light as an active material. His aim is to transform the surrounding space, allowing the “complexity of the simple” to unfold through the viewer’s experience and inviting a more intimate and resonant contemplation.
