Growing up in Lier, Belgium, creative expression was never something separate from daily
life. His father painted from a studio inside the family home, while his mother worked as a
goldsmith. New artworks regularly appeared on a long white wall that ran through the
house, becoming an ever-changing backdrop to daily life.
Although deeply influenced by this artistic environment, Duys developed his own practice
gradually and intuitively. Painting evolved from a creative impulse into an essential part of
how he understands and navigates the world.
Working primarily with oil paint, he approaches painting as a process of experimentation
and discovery. Rather than working from a fixed concept, his paintings evolve through a
continuous dialogue with the canvas, searching for balance between tension, contrast and
harmony.
Duys lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.
